Nice : the tourist office on-line

Nice Information Centre is now on-line. From last July 5th, it has its own website, /www.nicetourism.com"> www.nicetourism.com. Before, Nice Tourist Office only had one section in the general portal of Nice City as an Internet storefront. The new website, dedicated to the general public, widens the range of information available. Is is organized under four main sections. 'Your stay' gathers hotels, restaurants and activities.

Internet: the '.eu' at the Icann summit

The '.eu' for Europe and domain names with accent (those are currently tested by Verisign) are on the agenda for the Icann summit (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) which takes place in Melbourne from Friday March 9th until Tuesday 13th 2001. Another subject will be dealt with: the creation of new web suffixes which were selected in November 2000 (.aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name and .pro), for which the activation is getting late.

Domain names: Atos Origin's misfortune

You'd better not forget to replace your domain name. Atos Origin, 27 000 employees, French leader of online secured payment (the company is set up in Sophia Antipolis), learned it to its costs, after the misadventure revealed by the magazine called Transfert, in an article entitled /www.transfert.net/fr/cyber_societe/article.cfm?idx_rub=87&idx_art=4624"> 'Atos Origin récupère son nom de domaine'. Between Wednesday evening March 7th and Thursday morning 8th, the company faced the worst problems with its DNS server with the domain name sips.atos.com.

Le '.eu' pour l'Europe et les noms de domaines avec accent (ces derniers sont actuellement en phase de test auprès de Verisign) figurent au menu du sommet de l'Icann (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) qui se tient à Melbourne du vendredi 9 au mardi 13 mars 2001. Autre sujet abordé : celui de la mise en place des nouveaux suffixes web qui avaient été retenus en novembre 2000 (.aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name et .pro), suffixes dont le lancement a pris du retard.

Le premier réseau UMTS européen sera inauguré le 26 mars à Monaco : c'est ce qu'a annoncé Jean-Marie Messier, Pdg de Vivendi Universal, lors de la publication des résultats 2000 du groupe. Interrogé sur la position de Vivendi Universal concernant le haut débit sans fil, Jean-Marie Messier a évoqué l'expérience menée par sa filiale Monaco Télécom qui développe avec Nec et Siemens, un véritable laboratoire de l'UMTS (voir l'article 'Vivendi joue Monaco Telecom dans la course à l'UMTS').

Aérien : la bataille du Nice-Paris est engagée

En dépit des graves turbulences qu'il traverse, le pôle aérien français de SAirGroup (Air Liberté, AOM et Air Littoral) a décidé de se renforcer sur la ligne Nice-Paris. Marc Rochet, président du directoire, a ainsi annoncé jeudi 8 mars devant le comité central d'entreprise, la fermeture de certaines 'routes'. Mais en revanche, il a déclaré que la liaison Nice-Orly monterait à 24 fréquences par jour. Air France, de son côté, avait annoncé en début de semaine, un renforcement également de sa navette Nice-Orly. La bataille du Nice-Paris est donc engagée entre les deux pôles français.

After four years of good and faithful service, Jean-Louis Bottemer comes back to EDF, his company of origin. Cannes-Mandelieu airport : the stop of the London-Sydney rally

The first stop of the London-Sidney air rally will happen on March 11th 2001 at the Cannes-Mandelieu airport. 2001 represents the passage to the third millennium. As for Australians, it is also the celebration of the Australian federation centenary. On that occasion, 120 pilots will take part to a wonderful challenge : a 22.000 km air race (from March 11th to April 8th) between London and Sydney.This long journey relates the wonderful 'Kangaroos' trial' taken by aviation pioneers in 1919 and 1934. This rally will progress over 30 stops.

Wanadoo launches itself on the all inclusive long length Internet access : a new 100 hour package, including access and telecommunications, is proposed to the first 50.000 registrations (agreement of 12 months at least). That's a first step towards the Internet addicts. This step should allow big consumers who don't have ADSL to wait for the promised setting up of the unlimited package interconnection in the end of the year.

Airline: the fight between Nice and Paris has started

Despite serious turbulences it faces, the French air group, SAirGroup (Air Liberté, AOM and Air Littoral) decided to strengthen the connection between Nice and Paris. Marc Rochet, president of the board of directors, thus announced on Thursday March 8th to the central works committee the closure of some of the destinations. However, he declared that the flights between Nice and Orly will increase up to 24 flights a day. Air France announced at the beginning of the week an increase in flights between Nice and Orly as well.
