Monaco : a year late for the works in the harbour
Works in Monaco’s harbour are a year late. From now on, it was said to start in 2002. As a matter of fact, it seems that the project of a floating breakwater has been changed. Indeed, simulations showed that the heave could go underneath the breakwater and could disrupt the stability of the basin’s waters. The non-protected area under the waters will then be seriously reduced and we will have a breakwater nearly full.Works are not speeded up though. The principality is also getting ready to manage this enlarged harbour and to make profitable an investment of nearly 2 billion francs. Thus, a holding company of Monaco’s harbours was created. This limited company with a capital worth 150 000 euros will be owned at 100% by the monegasque State. Its vocation is to intervene not only in the management of the ground-water table but also in the business activity and the programmes on the area concerned by the works in harbours (next to the floating breakwater and the opposite bridge).
